The two Latin words, ‘Omnis’ and ‘Scientia,’ are translated to English as ‘All’ and ‘Knowledge,’ respectively. When put together, you’ll get ‘all knowledge,’ or ‘knowledge of all.’ The English dictionary translates Omniscient as all-knowing or knowing everything. You cannot hide anything from the person who is omniscient; if this person were law enforcement, then no one can go scot-free after committing an offence. It would be so easy to police our societies, and the rate of crime would be so low you can barely identify any.

When Eve and Adam committed the first offence, God came into the garden and asked Adam, where are you? Even before God probed further, they already knew that they were in trouble, because they believed that God knew what they did. Unfortunately, thousands of years after the Eden incident, people still believe today that they can somehow hide their sins from our God. This is the sad case where, although we have become so sophisticated and so enlightened compared to Adam and Eve, we have learned nothing in the process.

In Psalm 139 verses 1-6, we see someone who knew God so well that he was certain he could not hide anything from Him. Writing to acknowledge God’s perfect knowledge of man, David wrote:

O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.

When Cain killed his brother, Abel, in Genesis chapter 9, the Bible says the Lord asked him, “Where is Abel your brother?” Amazingly, Cain denied any knowledge or responsibility about Abel’s whereabouts, knowing certainly what he had done. Cain thought that the Lord who created the heavens and the earth and everything therein did not see or know that he had committed the first murder ever.

God’s omniscient nature is powerful and omnidirectional. The knowledge that sees the evil that men commit is the same knowledge that sees the devil’s plan against believers and moves to protect them. In 2 Kings chapter 6, when the king of Syria was making war against Israel, Elisha, the man of God, warned the king of Israel repeatedly about the plans and strategies of the king of Syria, to the extent that the king thought one of his servants was responsible for leaking his plans to Israel. I like the way one of his servants responded to him and said, “Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” How did Elisha know? Easy answer: he was in touch with God.

Elisha was able to tell the king of Israel the words that the king of Syria spoke in his bedroom, but God knows even the words that you have not spoken. He knows the thoughts and imaginations of our hearts and it is impossible to hide from Him. In John 21:17, Peter declared to Jesus when He asked him three times, “Do you love me?” “Lord, you know everything, you know that I love you.”

With multiple unique identification systems for everyone He created, our God knows us. He knows our going out and our coming in, our sleeping and our waking up, our ups and our downs, and He knows what we need and when we need them. When we pray to Him, we are not bringing to Him something new or something that would catch Him unawares. Before we open our mouths, He already knows what we are going to say. What else can anyone ask for, after having such a powerful God. As God’s children, we must rest assured that He has our back, and He’s got us covered. We may not know tomorrow, but we have the God who has tomorrow in His palms.

What to Do?

As we go about our daily activities, let us go with confidence, knowing that there’s nothing we can encounter that our God has not seen ahead. As parents do everything in their powers to protect their children, much more does our God who is unlimited in His abilities. He’s got us covered.
